Here at Maran Atha Homestead, we keep around 10 hives of locally adapted European honey bees.  Our bees live in 8-frame medium wooden Langstroth hives, where they draw their own wax on foundationless wooden frames.  Very old comb is routinely rotated out to ensure the wax remains free of environmental pesticide, herbicide, or fungicide residues.  Colonies are treated annually with oxalic acid, a soft organic treatment, to control varroa mites.  We never feed pollen substitute, would only feed sugar to a colony that was in danger of starving, and our bees always winter on their own honey.
